Gnumeric contains various custom canvas items that you could use as a
reference implementation:

        * item-grid is pretty complex, that renders the spreadsheet

        * item-bar is used to draw the column and row headings, should 
          be pretty simple to look at.

        * item-cursor renders the cursor only
