Before I say something [possibly] controversial, let me start by saying
that I LOVE Gnome and I don't ever see myself switching to KDE, please
read through to the bottom for my question. That being said, I just
installed KDE 2.2 and I've got to say, their control center and system
configuration apps really spank Gnome's. In many cases they have
capplets and system config apps that we don't even have. Some of these
things will be solved by the Ximian Setup Tools (sometime this century)
but there will still alot left to do.
Assume that I went and started taking the code for the different KDE
control center applets, salvaging what I could, and created Gnome
equivalents?
Would I have any chance of them getting included in Gnome? What about
Ximian?
I've noticed that there are lots of different gnome applications of
varying use. Many of these have very little visibity and are only found
by digging through the gnome software catalog (God I wish it had text
searching). Others are never included. Last but not least, Ximian is
pretty far behind in release versions for everything but the software
they develop. Maybe they should have a "Gnome Unsupported" channel or
something. The reason I put so much emphasis on Ximian picking up the
packages is because if you are a Red Carpet user, it's very easy to get
into trouble when installing Gnome rpms without using packages from
them.
Is it worth the investment? If so, anyone wanna help?
