I've played a bit with default GNOME Character application and found
out the following:
if you start the app in maximised windows, only some letters are displayed:

But if you switch it to normal window, then all letters are displayed
(you can scroll them with PageDown):

So, it seems there is a bug in the app when the window is maximised.
