I have seen gnome-shell restarts; but only when using
focus-grabbing applications such as VirtualBox or rdesktop.
Releasing the focus seems to occasionally crash gnome-shell. It
has not been frequent, or reproducible.
We have VirtualBox as well; have been using it for years.
Nevertheless this has not been an issue until the last couple of weeks.
The reset symptoms: The background goes black, all open apps are
collapsed to a single window (I normally have 3 - 4 populated), and
there is a lot of CPU and disk activity for about a minute, finally
the background is loaded.

Do you see anything in dmesg, /var/log/messages, or /var/log/Xorg.0.log
that corresponds to this event? Check your ~/.xsession-errors as well.
