Please, Gnome != Linux
Gnome is just one option for Linux out of many. Have a look at the alternatives... try some. Linux has always been about finding the right package for you, not about ensuring that the general direction or distribution conforms to your desires.
Yes gnome is not Linux (thanks God, or Linus..., whoever..)
the problem is that users wants to put a cd (pen drive) in the
computer an install the system in order to have a computer
useable .. there are few choices.. KDE, GNOME3..
if you want to install xfce, for example, only few distributions
That is why linx mint http://linuxmint.com
is in the top of
prefered distributions now.. it passed ubunto after 6 years
in the top.
You are probably referring to the statistics at distrowatch.com
These statistics are derived from the user visits to the distribution pages.
At the moment, the Mint page is supposed to receive over 6000 hits per day
and the other distributions about 2000-3000 hits.
Why would anyone visit the distrowatch.com
Mint page so often?
Is the distrowatch.com
demographic the demographic you want to focus on?
If you want to get to more precise statistics, have a look athttp://stats.wikimedia.org/wikimedia/squids/SquidReportOperatingSystems.htm
which tells a different story.
It makes sense to install the latest version of your favourite distribution, with the most recent GNOME.
Whether it is Fedora or Ubuntu or something else, you have the option to select the "Classic GNOME"
interface, which is the GNOME Panel from GNOME 2.x
I believe we are all trying to get more people to switch to free and open-source software.
GNOME Shell and Unity help the big masses of new users with an easier to use interface.
Let's make the effort to learn the new user interface.
