I cannot install new screensaver themes

I've followed the instructions in:

but I cannot get any new themes installed.

I've removed all the .desktop files in /usr/share/applications/screensavers/,
but the themes persisted, even after reboot. Only after a system update the
themes were deleted. I copied them back, but they don't appear.

Am I missing something, or is some step missing from the FAQ?
