I am not sure about gnumeric but surely you should be using OpenOffice?
OpenOffice includes facility to write pdf and many other formats.
And OpenOffice is open source and free.

Have just installed Gnome spreadsheet which works well enough but how do I convert the sheets to dpf files for emailing

Any help would be appreciated
