The window centering behavior may be application specific.
Some of the applications I use do this, and others seem to randomly
place windows.  XTerm, for instance, seems to not to place the windows 
in the center.  However, there are a few others which do.

For me, the reason this is annoying is because I'm using
Xinerama mode across two monitors - so the centering windows all end up
spanning the two monitors.
