Looks like an error related to not declaring the the varaible before
using it.

Are you using gcc-2.95?

Try using gcc-3.2x to compile and reporting this as a bug.

BTW if you are compiling all this from scratch, do yourself a favour and
use Garnome (www.gnome.org/~jdub/garnome) it ROCKS for this...
