Error starting gnome setting daemon

Hi,

I'm running Debian Unstable (who's Gnome situation is admittedly a
little shaky), but the last time I started up gnome, I got:

There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.

Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not
    work correctly.

The Settings Daemon restarted too many times.

    The last error message was:

    Failed to activate 'OAFIID:GNOME_SettingsDaemon

GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you
    log in.

Most of my settings look okay, but some aren't, such as the system font.
The item off the "Desktop Preferences" menu to change the system font
don't even exist now. I tried creating a new user under gnome to see if
some setting or lock file under my account was causing this, but even
with a "fresh user" the message appears. Any suggestions?
