One of the many ways gnome is like windows.

For mplayer Xv prob, try watching your movies from the console.

mplayer -vo vesa or svga. the 'o' key can remove the time display

-nofs is also a good option, -zoom too.

anoying doesnt adequatley describe gnome session managment.
