It should automatically work - if not a bug report should be filed

Menu editing has been problematic
At present you can do everything except add new categories via the panel itself via right-clicking on any entry in the menu, ie you can edit entries,remove entries and add new menu items.
As far as I am aware the only way to add new menu categories at present is to edit the file ~/.gnome2/vfolders/applications.vfolder.info
and add a record - the format is fairly simple to understand.
There is a gotcha on legacy 1.4 menu entries, these do not have a Categories= line so dissappear if they are edited.
If this happens find the file in ~/gnome2/vfolders/applications and edit to add the line
Categories=Application;(submenu name as appropriate - check in applications.vfolder.info for correct keyword)
