This is http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=82979 I believe.

The fix I expect in the 3-month timeframe is to move to
fontconfig/Xft2, Pango 1.2, and the VTE widget, but it might be nice
to apply a bit of a bandaid until then, maybe in gnome 2.0.1.
