gnome-applets bombs at make install

Hi 
I am currently building gnome2, but have a problem with building
gnome-applets, it builds but then bombs at make install with the message


GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE=/usr/local/gnome/etc/gconf/schemas
/usr/local/gnome/bin/gconftool-2 --makefile-install-rule
./modemlights.schemas
Failed to access configuration source(s): Couldn't resolve address for
configuration source:
 Bad address `/usr/local/gnome/etc/gconf/schemas'

every other package is finding the schemas

anyone any ideas
