I actually had this problem as well and never figured it out. However, I
noticed that if I logged in as root I got the normal Ximian desktop (with
Nautilus complaining about being run as root of course). Hope that is at
least a pointer in the right direction.

got the installer to go to completion, but now when I try and log into a
gnome session, I just get a black screen and no way out.
