Is it the foot menu that is missing or the entire panel that it was on?
If it's the prior you should be able to right click on the panel and
find an entry to add the foot menu to the panel. If it's the entire
panel that's missing, you'll want to run "panel" from an xterm. It
should be remembered and run next time you log in (I think).

I'm not sure what you are asking. Gnome and star office can run
simultaniously. Technicaly KDE and GNOME can run concurrently but they'd
be completely stepping on eachother. Similarly KDE can run concurrently
with StarOffice.

StarOffice is pretty much just another program. It doesn't care if KDE
or Gnome is running.

The problem is that these are *tar* files not tar.gz files. The "z" flag
for tar tells it to un-gzip the input. Thus the errors. tar xvf should
be what you want. Look at the man page for tar for more info (run "man
tar")
