Can you turn on debugging in your /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf (or perhaps it is
/etc/gdm/gdm.conf in mandrake, dunno) There is a section called Debug
or something like that. Then you'll get a lot more messages in
/var/log/messages

It seems pretty weird and something which I haven't seen in a very long
time. It would probably be the main daemon hanging somewhere. Try the above
and mail me the gdm output from /var/log/messages in private email.
