XMODMAP Problem with Gnome 1.2, Sawfish 0.34 and GDM

I have a problem with using XMODMAP. I have a 5 buttons mouse with
additional wheel. I want to change the physical button setting for this
mouse (XMODMAP -e "pointer = 1 2 3 6 7 4 5" in XINITRC), but I doesn´t
work. The changing works under a XDM/Enlightenment combination without
problems. Why? I think Gnome use it own mouse settings. How can I fix this
problem?
