Adding new Mime types

I really want to ask here, if anybody is able to
get new defined mime types working ??

When I add new mime types in the control center, they appear, and also
appear after reboot,
but simply have no effect when using gmc to open these newly defined
files.

Also I could not get rid of the mime type, that when I double click on
mpeg files, that
Gnome always wants to open xanim -f% for the file. I had never installed
xanim, nor do I want to.

For normal I use mplayer or xine.

So could someone please let me know how to get the mime types working ??
