I'd actually really like to know what you tried doing before you
resorted to this. I would have thought that navigation to the
background properties capplet and using it was fairly well
done, but perhaps there is some major defect in that we missed.

 * Launch the control center. Almost the first item is "Background".
   (or right clicking on the desktop if you are running gmc)

 * Change the Wallpaper to "None"

 * No more Red Hat logo.
