Building Control Centre

i'm trying  to complie gnome 1.4. So far following all of the faqs 
things have gone fairly well, however when i complie control centre it 
fails, complaining about

Undefined reference to esd_sample_getid

Undefined reference to esd_sample_free

I've tried a new copy of esound but this hasn't helped.

Anyone know whats going on ?
