Thanks for that lead. I found that when I start clean, I can get a
nautilus window open and use the configuration to turn off the desktop
management. I don't get icons in the background anymore, but at least
it lets the window manager run.
Then I got sick of Nautilus because of other miscellaneous crashes and
rpm-uninstalled it. Now I want to run GMC again, which does run, but I
don't get background icons anymore.
Can you please tell me how to turn them back on again? In GMC I find
preferences, and i say I want the icons on the top left, they don't
show. I suspect my turning off the background icons in Nautilus nuked
the background icons for GMC too.
Thanks in advance

ps: mime type editing still doesnot work for me either. I've used the
settings/handler routine, and I want to change jpeg files to be opened
by gqview, not eog. No matter how many times I change in that menu, it
doesn't work. However, If I become root and edit
/usr/share/mime-info/mc.keys with this:
image/jpeg:
icon-filename=/usr/share/pixmaps/mc/gnome-image-jpeg.png
open=gqview %f
edit=gimp %f
it works fine. Does the mime type handler work for anybody using gmc?
