Oh don't get me started on Nautilus.  It's a great idea but a horrible and
bloated implementation.  I'm running on a nicely beefy machine (ATI Radeon,
256MB RAM, P2-450, UDMA66 7200RPM drives).  There is nothing "too slow"
about this machine yet Nautilus is just a DOG on my systems.  I haven't had
a chance to run the 1.0 I don't think because I  can't get Ximian to install
on my 7.1 machine but I don't expect too much right now.

I don't know how to change the situation where the background becomes the
foreground...that's a real problem.  Looks like you might have to disect the
X configuration scripts.  Something controls what gets started and when.
