under:

# Screen sections

you probably want the first 'Section "Screen"' in the list; you'll see a
line like
modes "640x480"
change that to
modes "800x600" "640x480"
and it'll start up with 800x600 res, and a ctl-alt-+ will change between all
the res's listed on that line
