1. Kill gnome panel (kill $PID_OF_PANEL; get PID from ps aux).
2. Use the Enlightenment menu to start whatever tools from E you want.
Configuration issues (which icons to display in iconbox, etc.) are
covered in "man enlightenment".
I use this setup as well, and don't actually start a GNOME session. I
only start enlightenment and whichever GNOME tools I want from my
~/.xinitrc. I don't know how many other ways there are to do this; feel
free to try.
