Image usage: will Gnome ever do these things?

Over the last year, these ideas have come up and at least once
developers said the first would be possible.
1. Gnome terminal preferences: Randomly choose a background image from a
directory.
If that is not possible, make a command line argument that accepts the
name of a jpg file to put on the background, along with shading and
scaling parameters to determine whether it is tiled or stretched or
what.
2. Assign different background picturess to different workspaces.
Enlightenment and WindowMaker can. Sawfish steadfastly refuses to,
saying it is Gnome's job. Is it possible for Gnome to do it?
