Another point:  We want people to use Linux/Gnome, well if users can
hardly operate a Windows machine they sure as hell aren't going to
figure out mounting and unmounting of floppy disk drives.  Heck even
Richard Stallman was pushing to get supermount fixed and in the kernel
because of this.

Maybe this is a simplistic solution, but would it work?

1. patch the kernel floppy driver to flush the buffer after every
write operation. This would protect users from data corruption if
they eject without dismounting.
2. have the filemanager (or supermount or whatever should handle
this) unmount, then mount the floppy before every read operation.
Because of above patch, this should have little result on
performance.

It's a brute force approach, but it might work in theory.

Any comments?
