Most packages have an "uninstall" target, so if you still have
the sources and the generated makefiles, you could run
"make uninstall" in each directory.

You could do this with the new source that you are downloading
also - i.e. run configure/make/make uninstall/make install.
However, in this case if the older version you have installed
had different files than the new version, the uninstall might
not succeed completely, but it should get you there most of
the way.
