I thought it was just me with a duff setup :-)

I have a plain background but CPU Load applet shows max load - so its
not just waiting for something

Probably not connected, but I am getting mc file manager crashes
sometimes when I select File Properties.  Both problems started when I
upgraded to latest gnome-core and mc.
