gnome-session runs differently under gdm?

I've modified /etc/gnome/default.session a bit, mostly to add --nowindows
to gmc and turn off gnome-help-browser by default since there are tips for
that purpose.

My .xsession does nothing but exec gnome-session, so this works well from
a startx, but from gdm I get the default default.session, regardless of
what's in /etc/gnome. What causes this?

Also, it appears gdm is not even running gnome-session since that's
actually a wrapper script on my system (I'm not sure that if I were to put
the wrapper script stuff in default.session that it would actually get run
before anything else), and it does not appear at this time that my wrapper
is even running.

I'll keep playing with it, but at the moment I can't imagine what I'm
doing wrong. It SHOULD work at this point, and it does, unless I use gdm.
