unable to assign colours in gnome

When I try to plot with gnuplot or Roger comes up to ask my password when
stopping the screensaver (v3.23 ?) I get errors: unable to alocate colors
(named in gnuplot - though I can't remember which sorry and greys judging by
the hex RGB descriptions). What is going on and dow can I fix this?
