Unable to DISPLAY gnome applications

I have compiled all of the gnome libraries along with the control-center and gnome-core.   Everything has been installed.  When I invoke a program nothing is displayed on the screen.  I can see the progam gaining time so I know that it is running but nothing appears.  I know that there is nothing wrong with the X server since I can use use other X based programs with no problems.

Any ideas as to where to look?

Any help at this point would be greatly appreciated.

I'm running on AIX 4.3.2 and compiled everythinig with gcc 2.95.1.  The only real problem I have run into that I cannot account for is that the gnome-libs library failed one of the tests.  It failed the "metadata" test but I have no idea as to why (that was a previous message today that I'm waiting for a reply to).
