Just GAH-new. My guess (GAH-ess??) was that it was to emphasize the
retronym GNU is Not Unix . . .

Yep, "Gooey" is right. In the olden days, WIMPy (Window Icon Mouse
Pointer) interfaces were still pretty messy, hence the "Gooey GUI". ;-)

Mebbe so. But I oughta file suit for look-and-feel infringement: a
long-standing family joke (definitely older than RMS) is that our name
is pronounced "Kuh-nerr" as in "kuh-nee", "kuh-nife", and
"door-kuh-nob".
