Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by C library

Hello,

Don't know whether this is on topic for gnome or not, but I give it a
shot. 

When starting up gnome I get this message:

Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by C library

about 20 times in a row. Is there anybody who has a tip or pointer which
helps me to solve this problem? I compiled gnome from source on Linux
with kernel 2.2.15 and XFree 3.3.6
