Multiple Monitor Support

I have correctly configured X to support multiple monitors but would like to
configure gnome/sawfish to work as well.

The problem that I have is that xinerama does not work the way I want with
gnome.

One monitor is running at 1280x1024 and the other at 1024x768. Using
xinerama the panel extends across both monitors but I cannot see the right
side of the panel as it is being drawn below the screen boundary. (W2K
handles this by maintaining the same position for the bottom of the screen).
As this does not work I would like to run the displays independently. twm
works fine in this way and I can open windows on either monitor, but gnome
will only display the background and windows etc on display 0.0.

Is there a way I can get gnome running on both monitors?
