I took it as a shot against Redhat's effort-free desktop.  Blue background and
two icons.  Not very inspiring.  That was about the only thing that I agreed
with, however.

He may have had some good points, but they were too interwoven with insults. 
He's the founder of Gnome, theatrics aren't needed to get the attention of the
community.
