Stupid, stupid, stupid ....

I did something very stupid. A few weeks ago I decided to upgrade my
Gnome (under RedHat 6.2), but I made this decision at 1am (never, ever
change the system when you should be in bed sleeping) and I don't know
what I did, but I managed to tangle up the system pretty well.
I've fixed most of the problems, but I still have one that I can't seem
to be able to fix. Whenever I run gnomecc (the control-center) the main
window comes up, but if I try to select one of the sub-topics (like
background) I get a message "** WARNING **: Unable reach the
control-center."
My questions are two:
1) What do I have to start checking to figure out what the problem is.
2) Is there a good Gnome internals book out there that I can buy to
understand these kinds of messages.
Thanks a bunch,
Valerio
