setting right click menu options

When i right clicked a file in the gmc, i get the right click menu that has the edit as an option. I know it used to the work, now it does not, edit seems to have no effect. The file does open for the editing when i right click and select open with, and choose gEdi.
H ow we can change what appears in the right click menu for gmc? or the desktop icon's right click menu?
