How are you "adjusting" your display? Do you mean using the
monitor size and position controls?
If your display is centered under windoze but not under RedHat
(using the same video mode) then you should adjust it in X using
xvidtune. Also, modern monitors will "remember" your adjustments
of the front panel controls, but each mode (up to some number of
user-defined presets) is unique (ie, your adjustments while in
800x600 will not carry over to another resolution).
I know, it should work better than that, but each video card puts
out it's own unique signal for each video mode (even if they use
the exact same graphics chipset, they will still need different
monitor tweaks for the same modes).

system. You'll find some interesting info in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc
