Maybe not .tar.gz nor .tar, but .zip ? Since the directory info is grouped
and not compressed, you get a *fast* virtual filesystem with automatic
compression (levels 0-9).
Suppressing/Adding streams to a .zip can be extremely efficient (references :
I was used to Windows Commander and ZipFolders when I was using W$).
Windows Commander was using the Info-Zip code (I don't know if it is still
the case, but it was darn fast on my machine more than two years ago).
