Desktop Entries from multiple paths

I just installed gnome-core and gnome-applets 1.1.3. Now the main menu in
the panel reads desktop entries from /usr/share/gnome/apps/. Can I make
it read from another path as well (I want this to work systemwide). This
is because some applications included with Redhat 6.1 install desktop
entries in /etc/X11/applnk.
