My concern here is that there was information provided that I thought
was incorrect.  For a newby, this can be quite disconcerting and a real
turn off.  I don't want anyone to get turned off of Linux because they
can't get something to work, particularily if they have received wrong
information.

I know for a fact that the /etc/HOSTNAME file should not contain a user
id in conjuction with a host name.  I questioned the use of this
approach in the /etc/hosts file as I'd not seen it before, but was
willing to admit it was something I was not aware of.

No flames, but we all need to be careful when providing info, in order
to insure we help rather than make things worse.
