Help! Session dieing!

My Gnome session (latest Helix Gnome on RHL7) is quitting on me
mysteriously after longish random periods of inactivity (i.e. me at a
meeting or down the hall or something...). This is a major PITA,
especially since I usually have VMware running an NT session (crash!).
This is driving me nuts!

The only thing in /var/log/messages near the crash times is:

Dec 20 15:38:01 man gnome-name-server[1226]: input condition is: 0x10,
exiting
Dec 20 15:38:03 man PAM_unix[1093]: (gdm) session closed for user mnelson
Dec 20 15:38:14 man gdm[1093]: gdm_auth_user_remove: /home/mnelson is not
owned by uid 0.
Dec 20 15:38:14 man gdm[1093]: gdm_auth_user_remove: Ignoring suspiciously
looking cookie file /home/mnelson/.Xauthority

what's going on?
