OK, I've never tried influensing configure except for when it goes beyond 
unstable and into full-on broke, when I go in and hack the code to do the right 
thing.

Try changing the LIBS variable in the Makefile that actually gets used to build 
the library in question.  That's what I did, I'm pretty sure.
