I got the two dashes and the "=" from the usage statement that you get
from:
gmc --help
That was after I tried the standard switch, a la your suggestion. The
syntax suggested by gmc --help doesn't seem to work either.
I'm using RedHat 6.1 & 6.2, latest Helix gnome distro.
