Running Gnome / helixcode in greater than 8bpp

Being fairly new to linux, and especially suse ... I'm having issues
running gdm in greater than 8bpp. I can run startx --bpp -32 and
that'll run fine ... 24bit I think .. but of course .. that doesnt start
gdm ...
Any advice .. including <slap - rtfm> is appreciated :)
