Ok, I finally figured it out. After digging deeper, I discovered that the Gnome
script in the Sessions directory first looked for $HOME/.gnomerc, and if it wasn't
found it just executed /usr/local/etc/gnomerc. The problem was that on my system
neither file exists. When I did a symlink from $HOME/.Xclients to $HOME/.gnomerc, I
was able to log in. Of course I still have the problem logging in as root, but I
can wait to dig into that one later...
This brings up the question, shouldn't Gnome provide a default ${prefix}/etc/gnomerc
file--maybe in gnome-core? Seems like this would be a good idea, if gdm is
expecting to find one. I assume that RH 6 comes with something of the sort.
