gdm works slowly

Hallo,

we are working with RedHat 6.0 and gdm-1.0.0-36.

gdm works fine, if the entries are small in the passwortfile. Our passwortfile
has about 8000 entries. Then is the effect, that after input of userid
and press the Return-Key continues great many time, until I can input the
 passwort.

The command getpwnam isn't the problem. It works slippy.

This problem exists with gdm-2.0beta2 and press the returnkey, too. Only it is
possible here, with a click into the passwortarray to continue immediately.  


What is the solution?
Can I modify entries in gdm.conf? This is my file:
