gtk-1.2.6-1.i386.rpm is broken ?

On my SUSE 6.2 system I tried to install the newest gtk libraries. I
copied the files from a regular gnome mirror (ftp.informatik.uni-bonn.de).

Here is what Ive got after upgrading:

root@gg1:/usr/lib > ls -l libg[td]k*
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root           19 Oct 29 20:22 libgtk-1.2.so.0 ->
libgtk-1.2.so.0.5.1
-rwxr-xr-x   1 root     root      3281546 Aug 22 18:52 libgtk-1.2.so.0.2.1
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root           19 Oct 29 20:22
/usr/lib/libgdk-1.2.so.0 -> libgdk-1.2.so.0.5.1
-rwxr-xr-x   1 root     root       826157 Aug 22 18:52
/usr/lib/libgdk-1.2.so.0.2.1

The links are replaced, but the libraries itself not.

Also, rpm -plq on gtk-1.2.6-1.i386.rpm shows that this rpm only contains
the 1.2.so.0.2.1 versions, not the 0.5.1 versions of the libraries.
rpm -lpq on the SUSE 6.2 gtk libraries (version 1.2.3-3) gives the same
result.

Since nobody else seems to have the problem I have the feeling that *I* am
doing something wrong, but I dont know what. The alternative is the
gtk-1.2.6-1.i386.rpm contains the wrong libraries.

Is there anyone out there who has successfully upgraded with the above rpm
?

Cheers
