Gnome and E from sources

I am getting ready to do a fresh install of RH 6.1, after the install I want
to remove gnome and E and install them from source tarballs (I like using
tarballs) Anyway could someone tell me which rpms I should remove for gnome
and E and associated libs, etc, so that I can do this, or can I just install
the tarballs with the proper prefix (where the rpms put files). Thanks for
any help.
